The Big Picture

The people of the West Midlands snatched a world record from China, while the Olympics were being held in Beijing!

Normally we create graphics for people's offices and homes, so they typically hang on a wall. The Big Picture filled the car park at Millenium Point in Birmingham!

The phenomenal scale of the mosaic led to some major enhancements for our software and some very late nights...!

Putting the finishing touches to the Big Picture Arthur Bunce as a young man

Above left: when the sun first hit The Big Picture, some of the corners of the 112,896 pictures began to turn up!

Above right: the image to be the base for the mosaic was selected from ten finallists. The winning picture was of a young Arthur Bunce in training in the 1930's.

Below left: Nadine Causey from the Guinness Book of World Records adjudicated - she measured every dimension very carefully, did copious sums, and finally pronounced the Big Picture to hold a new world record. It was a brilliant moment!

Below right: the size of three tennis courts, the Big Picture was made from photos submitted by the people of the West Midlands in a fantastic community effort. There were more cats and dogs than children - what does that tell us?
